Essex Vehicle Charging partners with Keys Co-operative Academy Trust to provide a full service charging solution

Keys Co-operative Academy Trust is an educational charity formed by a cooperative of specialist schools with a common legal and moral purpose serving Essex and its communities.

Essex Vehicle Charging, specialists in EV charging installations and renewables, provide full charging solutions to businesses and schools across Essex and Suffolk, in partnership with Colchester EV Chargers.

In February 2024, the Academy Trust, working towards a greener future, invested in a new fleet of fully electric MG4 Trophy vehicles enabling staff to travel between the Trust schools in Essex.

The services provided as part of the full EV Charging solution included:

Management of the OZEV grant funding.
Risk assessment to meet the schools Health & Safety requirements.
Respected the schools Safeguarding requirement and were flexible with the school’s team in the hours they were onsite.
Access control of the chargers so that only authorised staff can access the charging.
Parking bay marking for the dedicated EV charging parking spaces.

Cautious optimism as UK battery EV sales exceed diesel sales for first time

Although the UK April car sales were massively impacted by COVID 19 we can draw a degree of cautious optimism from the statistics.

SMMT vehicle data show that car registrations were down by 97.3% compared to April 2019, however the BEV (Battery EV) cars only reduced by 9.7% meaning that Battery EV’s outperformed the sales of Diesel vehicles.

In total the share of all plug in sales (Battery and Plug In Hybrid) show a combined market share of 34.0% which was well ahead of Diesel sales at 25.0% and narrowly behind Petrol at 35.9%.

Quite a milestone for the EV market.

Wireless EV charging technology Down Under

When I visited Australia in 2019, apart from the Tesla dealership in Sydney I was underwhelmed with little evidence that this was a nation which was leading the world in the adoption of electric vehicles.

However, cutting edge Australian company Lumen has gained certification in making wireless electric vehicle charging technology.

The concept of wireless charging is nothing new, we have been charging iPhones using this technology for many years, but moving this application into the EV charging world is a real game changer at a time when our market seems to have accepted the concept of plug and charge.

Whilst Wireless EV charging is well understood and promising technology, it is yet to get a strong foothold in the “real world”, but maybe higher EV adoption will justify its expense.

The technology could in the future be used for opportunistic charging, at traffic lights. It could also be incorporated into specialised parking or stopping locations for service vehicles like buses and delivery trucks allowing them to re-charge while picking up passengers or dropping off deliveries.

More ambitiously, the concept of dynamic wireless power transfer could also allow vehicles to travel over a specialised path that could recharge them while they drive.

An EV driver needs only to park “in close proximity” to the wireless system, the website says, where a current is passed into the ground pad from a power source and then transmitted across the air gap to the vehicle pad. This technology would also address the issue of on street charging. In terms of performance, the “automated scalable system” can charge EVs at levels between 3.7kW and 22kW.

With EV sales expected to exceed gas-powered vehicle sales by 2030, the demand for revolutionary technologies that can be used to recharge electric vehicle batteries, such as wireless power transfer systems, will no doubt grow.

I wonder if we will still be using plug in chargers in 10 years time?
